Wandering around central station this morning looking for an ATM and I am overwhelmed with love for this city and place. I’m quite emotional actually, which is a bit surprising. The last few years have been hard for this city and the future is not certain. And yet so much good persists here, a wealth of experience and spiritual potential to be tapped into and released for more good, both here and beyond. This week I fly to Canada for Christmas and I can’t wait to be with family and loved ones, and yet I can’t wait to come back and live and work here. That astounding energy and dynamism for which Hong Kong was famous in the early years of this century is transitioning into something else. I feel it is something new and, while it will be much different, in ways it will be more beautiful, with new dimensions of depth, and life. Sometimes death is the path to life, and my feeling is that the old Hong Kong has passed through a form of death, and is now being reborn. I am speaking less about the organisation of the city as about its spiritual identity. Perseverance is still necessary, of course. Those who have lived here through the last few years know that well, and at times it has felt like moving through a dark tunnel. But a new light is tilting in and while for the moment it is still dim, the colour is golden. Leaning into this new year and season with anticipation and joy.
